But some of them, for example, navigation, allows to solve a huge part of questions only by knowing a proper method. Probably we can use a flight computer, but I do not prefer it in this kind of tasks because it can be solved with a simple sketch and formulae.
I did not do it in scale, but it does not matter for computation. Note that to enrol in an integrated training the school will have you go through a selection process. You have 18 months to pass all 14 papers from your first attempt of an exam. In addition, you can take each paper for a maximum of 4 times and you can sit a total of 6 sessions maximum. In view of these requirements, you will understand that it is not unfeasible but it requires a strategy at the outset to take advantage of all your attempts if you need them.
Most schools will give you a roadmap of when and which exams to take. You will then be left with 3 attempts and 3 to 4 sessions available if you need to retake some exams. As mentioned, the ATPL theory includes 14 exams. Here are all of them with their reference as you will most the time refer to them with their code.
I also give you the main subjects you will learn in each paper. Note that as you read this article, the EASA is working on merging both Communication exams and so the ATPL might be composed of 13 exams instead of 14 in the near future but this will be a minor change for you. The completion of your ATPL theoretical knowledge examinations will remain valid for the issuance of an ATPL Licence for a period of 7 years from the last validity of your IR entered in your CPL which is not an issue as you will probably — and I encourage you to do so — maintain you IR valid every year.
The amount of material to learn for the ATPL exams is quite substantial and can be overwhelming. It is important to be consistent in your learning by sticking to a schedule and plan on when you want to take your exams. The level of difficulty will also depend on the time available to you to learn the material. In a modular pilot training, you can either follow the pace of your school if you are full time or you can prepare yourself at your own pace if you learn through distance learning via the online resources of the school.
That represents the certain percentage of the total study time the EASA want you to take in person in a classroom. It could be in different form depending on the school. In my case I had to spend two weeks in the classroom at the beginning of my study. Other schools organise revision sessions of the exams that you will pass in your upcoming phase of training.
