Why is treanor retiring

Time to move on. So does that mean her partner on the sand will be making the same decision soon enough too? May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, 33, have become superstars in beach volleyball in the past eight years. Walsh and May-Treanor won gold in '04 and again in '08, becoming the first team to do that in the history of beach volleyball. On the way to winning golds in both Games, Walsh and May-Treanor never lost a set. They're considered the best ever, basically. Outside of a swimming pool, you'll be hard-pressed to find one.

The pair have admittedly become as known for their talent and success as for their garb and intensity on the sand. It's hot women playing volleyball -- like that's not bound to create some buzz? May-Treanor is currently the world record-holder for beach volleyball wins, as she's compiled in international individual competition.

I'd be surprised if Walsh doesn't follow suit here with a similar announcement during or by the end of the Games. By Matt Norlander. Jul 25, at am ET 1 min read.

I'll be making a fortune! I'm going to make more than I made on television. Unfortunately, one in every four people in Florida has a real estate license, so more than likely, if I run into four people, one of them has a license. I can't sell them anything. Second of all, a lot of people who are already here have a real estate agent that's a friend or a family member, so it kept getting narrower and narrower. So, the people that were potential clients were people who had never seen me, so there was no instant comaraderie.

The other problem was whenever I would run in to people, they always wanted to talk to me about weather. They didn't want to talk about buying a house. Then I tried jewelry sales. I was terrible. I'm a terrible, terrible salesperson. I tried timeshares -- I'm terrible. I tried a lot of things, but one of things that I did do that was successful and I enjoyed a lot, I became a substitute school teacher, because I have a degree in secondary education.

I enjoyed doing that for about four years, and it kind of saved my life, too, because it was a nice, regular amount of money. Like I said with real estate, I thought everybody would gravitate to me and would use me. So, there was a great deal of humility and growth in that situation, and I had now been doing it for eight years.

I was hoping that maybe I could get a full-time teaching job and I could make a living again, because I wasn't making a lot. Anyway, I got a phone call from some folks. One was Stephen Chavarie [News 13's former senior director of news], who said, "Come on down. Let's talk about it.
