Why detentions are stupid

When having a "tardy sweep" we can ensure the children can be accountable and have integrity to do the right thing and simply get to class on time.

I'm not saying we never have a bad morining and make it late to first hour, that could be you and your parents fault. However 2nd hour and so on, you have no reason to not be on time to class. This will teach the kids the challenges being late, because your new boss isn't gonna just except an excuse for being late to a meeting. Therefore teaching them at a young age, to be on time, could impact our society as they get older, just simply don't be late and you shouldn't have to get a detention.

Their are no excess for being late you need to take your own responsibility.

When you get that detention then you should know, OK I need to be early or on time next. It gives you time to cheek up on work you have missed. And need to finish. Detention should be inforced on students who are late to school. Students have the responsibility of getting to school on time.

If they are late, they should have or serve After School Detention. If they repeat, stricter consequences should be inforced on the student. No excuse for being late to school.

Why should the punctual people wait for the late people? If you are late you should get one chance to be punctual but after that the student should not be allowed in the lesson if late and should serve a detention for twice the lengh of the lesson and for how long rhey were late so more time is took away from the late person or people.

Being late is not something that should be tolerated when it comes to school as well as in the work place. If you were late for work you would be looked at negatively and possibly lose your job. If you get detention at school then you will see that your negative action will result in a bad outcome for you.

Learning early is better than learning later on that tardiness is not something you should do. At Turlock High school, You are given 1 detention for 6 tardies, 2 for 9, 3 for 12, 4 for 15, And ISS afterwards, And with enough you can get suspended. The system is clearly flawed. If you punish a student negatively for being tardy is understandable, But when it interferes with the students learning and could damage that same students grades, That should be where the line should be drawn.

For instance I have a class on the very edge of campus and have to go to the next class on the whole other side of campus. I have tried many different ways to get to class and neither of them work to get to class on time. Plus there isn't any time to do anything else that you might need to do ike use the bathroom or drink water. To make matters worse the teacher makes us use passes to leave the class for those necessities, Meaning if I run out of passes I am essentially screwed.

For schools with big campus' like mine you need to not give schedules like mine out to other students. Even my friends who have the same problem with their schedules are late to class. There needs to be a solution to tardiness other than detentions or worse punishments, Especially if the student is late because of the placement of classes on their schedules. My school gives out detentions if you are tardy 3 times a quarter. I got one for being a second late 3 times because it "causes a disruption" When I walk into class each day, Late or not, No one has started anything yet, Not even the teacher, So who does it disrupt?

I'm not saying that being late is right, But giving out detentions for it is stupid because who does that help? It's not like I'm doing anything wrong.

I've never gotten a detention before for doing anything wrong because I'm normally a good student. Ruining my transcript by labeling me as "lazy" is false and not right.

Some students may be let out late from previous lessons then they get a detention for being late to next lesson but this isn't fair. If they were let out late then they should not get in trouble for That. This should not be allowed as students might have valid reasons. First of all, Lateness is a natural cause caused by a myriad of things, Second of all detentions are for the real bad things! Anyone can be tardy for many reasons such family issues, Slept in or personal problems. Im a good person and got detention.

My high school is so strict and few years ago in my high school they never gave detention for tardiness. For the first time I got 1 hour detention for 3 tardies and 2 hour detention for 5 tardiness. That's stupid. Detention for tardiness? Stupid id frequently get detention to the point where they even scheduled an ABS Alternate Bell Schedule All just because i was late, Even just a minute. I literally cannot see any valid reason why you should punish a kid just for being late.

Say High School, You have some kids driving and some not. For the ones that don't' drive yet, Rely on others to drive them. It may be traffic, Every other parent out there and the lines at the school. Which there is a really long one at my kids school every morning. Detention should not be served. At least they show up. I can see if they are excessively late or did something bad. Sometimes I miss the bus, Sometimes my fellow classmates miss the bus.

Their parents have cars, So usually when they miss the bus they still arrive on time since their parents drive them. Unlike me who has to take cabs by myself on days my mom goes to work later in the afternoon, I'm sure its partly because she doesn't want to leave and then come back.

Even if I take a cab right after the bus i'll still be late because they pick people up along the way. Now here's a kid with severe anxiety being thrown into a car full of strangers, Finally gets to school, Gets detention, And later in the day gets thrown into a little room with a bunch more strangers. I remember having my face tucked into my legs, Crying my eyes out and breathing heavily like I was about to have an anxiety attack. And don't even bring up "real world problems" you get to know the people you work with, You don't just get thrown into a room with a bunch of people that may have beaten up someone that day.

Sometimes I would be late because my mother would have to take my brother to school first then take me which would be like an extra 30 mins. My friend is late to school almost everyday because his father always wakes up drunk or hungover and doesn't take him until an hour has passed time to go. Children will know not to repeat their bad actions to have them end up in detention in the frst place, resulting in better behaviour.

And better behaivor means less distactions during lesson. And less distrations means more learnig time. And learning time affects pupils futures. I think detention improves behaviour. As an educator in the profession for more than 10 years, I find that detention is often misused.

However, it can constructed to be an effective deterrent, which is all we can hope for with any negative punishment. Detention is best used, not as study hall or cleanup time, but, rather, as a means of getting students attention by exhausting a students free time.

That is, if it's structured correctly. Children and adults need to look at what is right and wrong and sometimes not having someone to lead them may cause mis-behaviour needing them to be punished so that don't make the same mistakes.

Its for their own benefit, and a great chance for someone to learn from them. Kids should get detention because it takes away there freedom at lunch or after school.

This is an effective form of punishment because no one wants their lunch time with friends taken away. Also it scares kids into not acting out and teaches kids how to be respectful and respectful to other kids and adults. Students will try not to make the same mistakes after they have had detention also detention gives the student time to think about what they have done wrong.

For instance-for me getting a disappointing look from my teacher wounded me for days. I would never get as far as detention. My brother on the other hand could care less about looks from the teacher hated detention because he would miss the first 30 minutes of sports after school.

My sister hated lunch detention because that was when she got to hang with her "girls" because they didn't have any classes together.

So, missing a lunch meant you were out of the loop when it came to pertinent information like who's "going" with who, who no one was speaking to that day or who's house everyone was hanging out. I also knew kids who had detention so often one would think it was officially part of their class schedule.

I believe what is important, is to make sure whatever form of discipline that is issued out is effective-which means there must be much thoughtful consideration for each individual student in that consequences should be "tailored" to fit the misconduct and the student to bring about a positive change in behavior. It's been around longer than it's been around much longer than our parents have in their parents before them so why can't we continue and if you are nerdy like me you get bullied a lot so kids who bully during the day after school you don't get bullied this is why.

I support detention in schools because it teaches kids that they shouldn't have bad behavior, And that this is the consequence. Parents also need to learn they can't allow this to happen with their child. As a student myself I say we all need better standards in schools for this kind of behavior.

Detention is a great way to get students working the school and getting things clean. Janitors need a break! And after school detention is a great way to get the school cleaned. It teaches the students a lesson because who wants to clean?

Detention is a great way to get free child labor. Pleease we all know detention instills a level of respect that is easily attained by those who've been punished for their misdeeds. I personally think detention is sort of a prevention of fun and obviously this would stop most sensible human beings from getting in to trouble.

Detention is indoubtebly sensible. As somebody that was in it plenty, I can say it was a punchline more than it was anything else and nobody in it cared. I'm a college grad, I was not some rotten lost cause but that's pretty much how you're labeled when you're in there. It's not an incentive to avoid whatever got you there, it's a minor inconvenience at most.

Detention only starts the children on a long line of understanding that when they do something wrong, they are simply pulled apart from their peers for an extended amount of time to think about what they did.

I think more constructive punishment, such as forcing the kids to help around the community or help the high school or middle school with projects will spark an interest in community service, as well as giving the kid a sense of purpose.

It may even keep them more busy and likely to use their time in wise ways. I do not believe that dentenion serves a purpose, because the same children are uselly back in dention for doing the same thing.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If detention, did not work the first time, the school system needs to be creative and implement another cause to correct the behavior! Detention doesn't do much but prove that someone has the power to cause you an inconvenience. It's my understanding that kids that are put on detention are just basically made to waste time not doing much of anything.

There's no attempt to correct the behavior that got the kid in trouble, just supposedly a set amount of time to "think about it" while not being free to do what he wants. As a form of behavior modification it really isn't very effective. A detention can leave a kid guilty for a week or so, But it won't help the situation.

In fact, The child is likely to get angry and get in trouble continuously for the same reason.
