That's what makes The Wiener's Circle stand out from the scores of good-natured but forgettable corner grills in our city. People go to the Wiener's Circle to be insulted by the staff, and indeed, customers take it as a badge of honor, like getting razzed by Don Rickles. Why don't Chicagoans put ketchup on hot dogs? Ari Levy said one of the strong traits of The Wiener's Circle is the restaurant as theater, and they hope to leverage that to greater exposure.
The restaurant has always been known for its playfully rude service, but it wasn't until public radio's "This American Life" profiled the restaurant in that its reputation was codified into Chicago lore. While everyone seemed to be in on the joke, those segments also invoked some uncomfortable truths — mainly, a mostly white customer base from Lincoln Park versus a mostly black restaurant crew, each playing a "who can cross the line" game of chicken.
